Q & A with Rick Christian, Literary Agent

For almost 20 years, Alive Communications has served a select group of authors who represent the best of the best.

Located at the edge of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Alive Communications is ultimately known by the company we keep: our authors tell the story of what we do. Their success can be measured in a number of ways:

  • Best-sellers. Ten books represented by Alive Communications have reached the #1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Almost 100 of our titles a year appear on the national best-seller lists, including USA Today, Publisher's Weekly, and more.
  • Sales. Twenty-one Alive titles have sold more than one million copies each. Each year, Alive agents negotiate hundreds of book and sub-right sales with dozens of publishers in the United States and around the world (see partial list below).
  • Awards. Alive authors have been honored with hundreds of major literary awards and are regularly profiled in national media.

Notwithstanding such recognition, the heart of Alive Communications is a love for words, and for discovering and serving today's best, most gifted authors. Alive agents all come from publishing backgrounds, and their love for the craft is evident. By serving the message and the messenger well, Alive Communications ensures that each author grows professionally to the next level.

Alive agents are individuals with proven track records in the industry. They are known for their love of words, strategic thinking, negotiation skills, business acumen, relational abilities, and marketing savvy. They represent authors in a wide variety of genres: adult fiction and non-fiction (self-help, biography, theology, memoir), youth/teen fiction and non-fiction, children's, gift books, Bibles, and more. Alive's authors' works are showcased wherever books are sold - from independent booksellers to national chains and mass merchandisers, from catalogs to grocery stores, airports to web sites.

Alive Communications was founded in 1989 by S. Rickly Christian, a Stanford graduate who wrote several best-selling books while working for a number of publications, including The Saturday Evening Post. Today, he is joined by agents Lee HoughBeth Jusino, and Joel Kneedler. The agency's effectiveness has earned national press attention, with agency profiles in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and Christianity Today.

steve arterburnI have worked with Alive Communications in my own personal publishing and with my work with Women of Faith. They have been with me every step of the way, not just looking over a contract, but planning the next project and creating new opportunities. I consider the 15% they take the cheapest personal and professional consulting fee I could pay. It is the bargain of the century. Because of the great work of my agent at Alive, we have created multiple projects that have now topped 6 million book products sold. The biggest strength of Alive is that if you truly have a remarkable idea with great content, they will help you transform a very good book into a powerful movement.
